Speaking Posts

Speaking posts are a fun way to speak to another person quietly, but from a long way away, as the sound is taken underground through a pipe. They are a good opportunity to enhance oral skills.

This site is a designated hedgehog release site for rehabilitated hedgehogs, and have been carved in wood on top of these speaking posts.

The Speaking Posts are part of the Frog Pond Wood sculpture trail.

Sculpture trail created by Ami Marsden and Nigel Simpson

Activity

The hedgehogs on top of these posts are friends that have lost each other in the woods.

Can you let each other know where you are by describing where you are and what you can see around you?

Suggestions

  1. As well as speaking, listening is important too. Why not close your eyes and have a listen to see what you can hear in the natural world?
  2. Using your fingers, count how many different sounds you can hear. Can you hear the tweeting of birds, the wind in the trees?
  3. Send a message through the pipe into the ground, and have a chat with the worms and creatures living underground.
  4. Make a hedgehog by finding some mud and pushing in some sticks for hedgehog spikes, and any other found natural materials for eyes, wings or legs.
