Music Maker

Exploring different sounds in the woodland and how they are made is a valuable experience for young children.

It can extend their descriptive vocabulary as well as give them a greater understanding of the properties of materials.

The Music Maker is part of the Frog Pond Wood sculpture trail.

Sculpture trail created by Ami Marsden and Nigel Simpson

Activity

With the wooden beater provided, play with ‘tapping’ rather than ‘hitting’ the tubes to see what different notes can be made.
Artwork by Beth Marsden

Suggestions

  1. Copy the note by singing it with your voice.
  2. Have fun making up a beautiful song to cast some magical sounds across the woodland.
  3. Have a look close by for a selection of different sticks and see what other sounds you can make with them on the tubes. Can different sounds be made by different sticks?
  4. Try tapping out a rhythm, and counting the beats. Have a little explore and see what other things you can make sounds on with your stick, looking for different surfaces to experiment with. Awake the worms!
