‘Pupil well-being is at the heart of Afon-Y-Felin Primary School’ according to latest inspection report

Afon-Y-Felin Primary School in North Cornelly has been praised by schools’ inspection body Estyn for creating positive working environments for both pupils and staff.

Inspectors found that pupil well-being is at the heart of the school, with pupils telling inspectors that the school is a calm and caring place where they feel safe and able to speak to staff if they feel worried or anxious.

The report also highlighted that many pupils, including those with additional learning needs, make good use of the wide range of learning experiences on offer and make good progress in most areas of learning.

The pupils were found to be well motivated to learn and collaborate enthusiastically on interesting topics. They enjoy helping leaders to make decisions about improving their school and are very proud of the important changes they have made.

The leadership team was also praised for creating a good team ethos among staff who successfully support pupils’ well-being.

Inspectors said leaders have formed close working partnerships with many outside agencies, earned the confidence of parents and established a range of effective approaches to identify the correct provision so that pupils can achieve the best outcomes possible.

In line with usual practice, Estyn included several recommendations for the school to focus on and the school will address these recommendations through its school development plan.

Everyone at Afon-Y-Felin Primary School should be very proud of this positive Estyn report and it’s particularly pleasing to read that pupils see the school as a calm and caring place, where they are comfortable speaking to staff about any worries or concerns.

It is also good news that the strong progression of the pupils learning has been recognised and I am certain that the school will address the recommendations mentioned and continue to grow from strength to strength.
