Funding approved for new community facilities

The latest community schemes to benefit from a support fund set up by Bridgend County Borough Council have been approved by Cabinet.
Under the Town and Community Council Capital Grant scheme, a new £17,895 wetland area is to be created by Coychurch Higher Community Council as the first stage of a larger project, while the ongoing refurbishment of Cornelly Community Centre is set to continue with the £19,000 installation of all-new windows.
Cabinet agreed that a third application to the scheme - for new boilers and thermostatic valves to be installed at the offices of Maesteg Town Council – should look at using alternatives to fossil fuel boilers instead, and that the council’s Decarbonisation Programme Manager should work with the town council to explore environmentally friendly alternative options.
The annual grant scheme, which encourages town and community councils to apply for a share of up to £65,000 funding, is designed to support projects that are directly linked to the local authority’s Community Asset Transfer (CAT) programme.
In 2021-22, there were nine applications ranging from essential repairs, new flooring and accessibility improvements at local community centres to war memorial footpath resurfacing and new drainage and fencing at local playing fields.
Previous improvements made under the scheme have focused upon play area refurbishments at Waun Cimla Park in Pyle and at Litchard Park, the John Street public toilets in Porthcawl and various sports pavilions and community centres.
Bridgend County Borough Council has been increasing its collaboration with town and community councils to foster a culture of joint working, and this grant scheme recognises the extremely important role they can play in helping to manage and maintain local facilities and services.
As there were fewer applications for the support funding this year, we will ensure that any money not allocated will be added to the fund for 2023-24.
