Definitive Map and Statement
The Definitive Map and Statement is the legal record of public footpaths, bridleways, byways and restricted byways.
The map illustrates the line of the path and the statement gives a brief worded description of each route.
Originally produced using the procedures outlined in the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949, the Map and Statement has been reviewed and published twice in the past 50 years.
The definitive map and statement provides evidence that a path exists and may be used in a Court of Law.
However, the fact that a path is not shown on the map and statement does not necessarily mean that 'rights' have not accrued and it may be possible that such paths may be added through a Modification Order.
The Network Map
The Network Map shows the current location and legal status of Public Rights of Way.
Please note this is not the Definitive Map. The Definitive Map (paper document) is the legal record of Public Rights of Way. This is the working copy of the Definitive Map.
It shows the current alignments of the public rights of way as they are on the ground. By viewing this map you are assuming full responsibility for the use of this information.
