Bridgend Local Nature Partnership
The Bridgend Local Nature Partnership (LNP) aims to reconnect people with nature. The partnership brings communities together to explore, discover and share nature on their doorstep. This in turn can provide benefits to our local wildlife.
Nature in Bridgend County Borough
Bridgend County is overflowing with nature and a mosaic of habitats. These include ancient woodlands, wet and chalk grasslands, river valleys, coastal sand dunes and saltmarsh. Habitats support an exceptionally varied fauna and flora, including many rare and declining species.
The county contains a European designated Special Area of Conservation (Kenfig SAC). This includes the two National Nature Reserves (NNRs); Kenfig on the Glamorgan coast near Porthcawl, and nearby Merthyr Mawr NNR.
These are part of a huge dune system, which once stretched along the coast from the River Ogmore to the Gower peninsula. Kenfig Pool lies at the heart of the reserve and is particularly valuable as a stopping off point for migrating birds. Kenfig Pool has the largest freshwater lake in south Wales.
Bridgend Local Nature Partnership
The Bridgend LNP brings together a wide range of organisations. This includes individuals with an interest in local nature and representatives of:
- Bridgend County Borough Council
- Natural Resources Wales
- Swansea University
- Plantlife
- Wildlife Trust
- Bryngarw Park
- Keep Wales Tidy
This LNP is part of a nature recovery network made up of 23 local nature partnerships across Wales. Together, these partnerships aim to create a Wales that is rich in nature for all through sharing knowledge, experience and best practice.
The Bridgend LNP exists to:
- raise awareness and interest in nature conservation
- maintain and enhance biodiversity within Bridgend County Borough
- increase engagement in nature based activities and develop skills
- promote actions and behaviours to reduce pressure on local species and habitats
