Senior Open set to boost economy across Bridgend County Borough

The Senior Open’s return to Porthcawl is moving ever closer (27-30 July) and the much-anticipated major golf tournament is set to offer a boost to the economy right across Bridgend County Borough and Wales as a whole.

The tournament, which is being sponsored by Rolex, is being held at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club for the third time after previously attracting visitors and media coverage from all over the world during its previous hosting duties in 2014 and 2017.

Over 43,000 spectators attended the event in 2014 which generated an estimated economic impact of £2.16m. Then in 2017, the comprehensive television coverage was estimated to have benefited the local economy with a media equivalence value of £5.2m.

Reigning champion Darren Clarke will be looking to retain his trophy, but he will be up against many legendary golfers such as Miguel Angel Jimenez, fellow Ryder Cup icon Padraig Harrington and Wales’ Ian Woosnam.

Spectators are encouraged to arrive at the venue by utilising active travel options such as walking, car sharing, cycling and public transport. However, there are around 2000 public car parking spaces in an adjacent field to Royal Porthcawl. The public are advised to follow signs for directions.

It’s a real honour for the council to be one of the official delivery partners for the event and this is a fantastic opportunity to showcase what Bridgend County Borough has to offer on the world stage.

It’s also pleasing to see that pupils from nearby West Park Primary School have been involved in the build-up to the tournament by attending a golf clinic at Royal Porthcawl. This tournament has the power to inspire our young people for the years to come.

If you’re staying in the local area for a few days, please visit our website to find out what else you can enjoy throughout the county borough.
