Residents’ views to help shape next steps on dog control in Bridgend County Borough

The findings of a 12-week public consultation on proposed measures to tackle dog fouling and irresponsible dog control across Bridgend County Borough are set to be considered by Bridgend County Borough Council’s Cabinet on 22 September 2026.
The consultation, which took place earlier this year, attracted 1,273 responses and gave residents an opportunity to raise concerns and suggest where further action may be needed.
Of those who responded, 90.9 per cent agreed that the proposed Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) for dog control should be implemented.
If approved, the proposed PSPO would require people responsible for dogs to:
• Collect and properly dispose of dog faeces;
• Carry suitable bags or other means of collecting dog faeces; and
• Put a dog on a lead when instructed to do so by an authorised officer where the dog is considered to be out of control or causing alarm or distress.
A number of respondents also raised comments about dog fouling on playing fields and sports pitches, including the potential impact on children’s safety and public health, as well as the ability of sports clubs and communities to make full use of these facilities.
In response to these views, Cabinet will also be asked to consider whether a further consultation should take place on a separate PSPO covering specified areas where additional restrictions on dogs could apply.
