Pupils help drive recycling message across the county borough

Monday 15 June 2026

More than 750 Year 7 pupils from comprehensive schools across the county borough have taken part in an exciting waste and recycling education project delivered by the council’s waste and recycling team.

Through a range of interactive one-hour workshops, pupils learned all about responsible recycling behaviours, including what can and cannot be recycled, while exploring the importance of sustainability and the journey of materials from extraction and use through to disposal, treatment, and reuse.

As part of the initiative, the pupils were invited to showcase their creativity through a poster design competition for the council’s recycling vehicles.

The three winning designs, created by pupils at Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg in Llangynwyd, and Porthcawl and Maesteg comprehensive schools will now be displayed on recycling vehicles to help promote positive recycling messages within communities throughout the county borough.

I’m delighted to see the creativity and enthusiasm shown by the pupils, and would like to thank all participating schools, staff, and pupils for their support in making the project such a success. Educating young people about recycling and sustainability is vital if we are to build greener and more environmentally responsible communities for the future. Congratulations to the Year 7 pupils from Heronsbridge, Coleg Cymunedol Y Dderwen, Llangynwyd, Brynteg, Porthcawl and Cynffig comprehensive schools who took part in the competition.  The standard of entries was fantastic, and the pupils should be extremely proud of their work and the positive messages that they are helping to promote within schools, homes, and communities. Well done to the winning pupils. We are proud to display these designs on our vehicles to help spread these important recycling messages across the county borough.
