Public invited to ask questions ahead of council debate on flooding and impact of extreme weather

Friday 10 October 2025

Residents of Bridgend County Borough are being invited to submit questions via their local elected members ahead of a council debate on the issues and problems that can be caused by flooding and  increasing incidents of extreme weather.

With the debate set to take place at Council on Wednesday 22 October, the deadline for submitting a question is 4pm on Monday 20 October. Simply contact your local councillor to pass on your question – if you are not sure who your local elected member is, you can check online at the ‘Find your local councillor’ page at www.bridgend.gov.uk

At the Council meeting on 22 October, members will debate the following question: “Instances of extreme weather are affecting the county borough more frequently. This can lead to flooding, problems with highways infrastructure and interruptions to essential services, i.e. electricity and water.

“How resilient is Bridgend County Borough in adapting to these events, which could possibly be attributed to climate change, and when they occur, how effective are we in supporting our communities?”

Copies of the agenda for the meeting will be published at the council website in the week before the meeting takes place. The meeting will be webcast, and a recording will be made available.

“Flooding can occur for a number of reasons – from culverts which become blocked by fly-tipping or debris that has been washed downstream to systems and waterways which have simply become overwhelmed by the sheer amount of rainfall. “The council regularly checks to ensure that culverts are clear or to remove obstructions that could cause problems, and we also have a system of culvert alarms in place to alert us to rising water levels so we can respond to a situation as quickly as possible. “Nevertheless, especially heavy rainfall can still cause problems as it can result in ‘hydraulic overload’ which forces the water running through a drainage system to over-top and spill out. “As the frequency and scale of severe weather events has also increased in recent years with incidents of heavier than average rainfall, this debate will provide an insight into the situation, and will help us to consider how resilient the authority is when it comes to dealing with flooding. “Local residents can support this by submitting relevant questions via their elected representatives, so please consider taking part and making the most of this opportunity to contribute to the debate.”
