An ethos promoting wellbeing and mutual respect between pupils and staff has been illuminated in a recent Estyn inspection of Maes yr Haul Primary School, based in Broadlands, Bridgend.

The primary school has been praised for the exceptional behaviour of its learners, along with the clear respect the pupils have for themselves, each other, members of staff, and visitors alike.

The primary school has been further commended by inspectors for supporting staff in developing leadership skills, the opportunities available for learners to assume leaderships roles, as well as for the school’s aptitude to accommodate the diverse needs of pupils, including learners with additional learning needs.  The Estyn report also noted how close relationships with external partners support families needing extra help.

Headteacher, Kevin Stroud, said: “I am delighted that Estyn has recognised the exceptional work and strong commitment of our staff, leadership team, governors and parents to providing the best for all our pupils at Maes yr Haul.

“As a team, everyone strives to ensure that we are a place of excellence for all our pupils, maintaining a positive ethos with a high focus on wellbeing and securing strong progress for all our pupils regardless of their background or individual needs. Staff are proud of their school and work hard to create a stimulating and nurturing environment in which every pupil can thrive and reach their full potential across a wide range of different skills and interests.

“I am particularly pleased that Estyn has recognised our strong track record in supporting student teachers through their Initial Teacher Education and developing our teachers’ leadership skills. They are the teachers and school leaders of the future, and it is a commitment and responsibility that is very important to me.

“My sincere thanks to everyone involved with the Maes yr Haul family for their unceasing commitment to doing their very best for our pupils, now and for the future.”

Councillor Martyn Jones, Cabinet Member for Education and Youth Services, said: “What a fantastic Estyn report – staff and pupils at Maes yr Haul Primary School should be extremely proud.

“The fact that wellbeing and respect are so highly prioritised at the school provides an excellent foundation on which everything else can be built.

“Well done all!  Superb!”
