Planned industrial action for schools is put on hold

The proposed strike for 14 February has been postponed in light of a new pay offer to educators from Welsh Government.

Education unions NEU and NAHT have both agreed to present the new pay offer to their members and representatives and hold a ballot.

An extra 1.5%, in addition to this year's 5% pay award, together with a 1.5% one-off payment, has been offered to teaching staff.

Welsh Government is also making several commitments to help lessen teachers' workloads in the short, medium and long-term.

Education and Welsh Language Minister Jeremy Miles said: "The decision not to proceed with strike action next week is good news for pupils, parents, carers and staff.

“We also welcome that NEU and NAHT have agreed to take the new pay offer to their members and representatives.

“Discussions over recent weeks have been productive, where we have made good progress on issues such as reducing staff workload and supporting wellbeing. I would like to thank everyone who has participated in these constructive negotiations.”

This is welcome news for all concerned. It reflects movement in the right direction for our educators, highlighting how Welsh Government is taking note of their plight, and showing an inclination to work with teaching staff towards an arrangement that satisfies everyone.

Councillor Jon-Paul Blundell, Cabinet Member for Education
