Oldcastle Primary School is praised for community links

Thursday 03 July 2025

During a recent Estyn inspection, Oldcastle Primary School, described as inclusive and welcoming by inspectors, has been commended for its engagement with the community, as well as its many other strengths.

The Bridgend-based school was praised for the support it offers to the school community, providing varied activities to pupils and parents/carers to develop important life skills, as well as advice to those facing challenging circumstances.  Estyn inspectors noted how parents/carers value this support, with it positively impacting the wellbeing of the family unit.

In an environment which is centred around the welfare and happiness of the children, inspectors recognised how pupils communicate confidently, with learners becoming increasingly articulate as they progress through the school.  The Estyn report highlighted how pupils’ opinions are clearly valued, with many children keen to participate in pupil voice groups which empower the learners to implement change within the school.

The Estyn report spotlighted Headteacher, Ceri Littlewood, for her understanding of the school and strong leadership, with staff working successfully as a supportive team.  Governors were also recognised as having an instrumental role in school life, offering a good balance of support and challenge to leaders.

Headteacher, Ceri Littlewood, said: "I am delighted that staff have been recognised for providing a happy and caring environment, where staff and pupils show a high level of respect for each other.  It was also pleasing to note that the inspectors acknowledged our excellent partnerships with families and our community-focused work.  An Estyn inspection reflects a snapshot of the life of a school, and the strength of any school is in the staff who serve the children and community in which it is based."

“We are thrilled at Oldcastle Primary School’s fantastic Estyn report!  It highlights how the success of a school is fundamentally based on the wellbeing of the children and their families.  Well done to all staff – it is clear that your dedication, commitment and care is having a huge positive influence on the community of the school.  We are extremely proud of all of your efforts!”
