New Parkinson’s football sessions hailed a major success
Wednesday 18 February 2026
A new football initiative designed specifically for people living with Parkinson’s disease is making a massive impact in Bridgend County Borough, with participants and organisers calling the initiative a "game-changer" for the local community.
The sessions are the result of a strong partnership between the Football Association of Wales (FAW), Parkinson’s UK, and Penybont Football Club. Recognising the high number of individuals and carers living with Parkinson’s in the area, the groups teamed up to create a space where exercise meets community support.
The weekly sessions are open to both men and women, focusing on more than just scoring goals. Each session kicks off with a group warm-up, followed by skill-building activities designed to improve focus and concentration—two areas often impacted by Parkinson’s.
The morning wraps up with small-sided football games that are safe, inclusive, and tailored to the abilities of everyone on the pitch.
For many, like local resident Claire, the sessions have been a revelation. “I find these sessions very empowering - I thoroughly enjoy being active and interacting with other team members. I’m so glad these sessions have started up in Bridgend. I would encourage anyone with Parkinson’s who is able to come along and give it a go! It’s great fun!”
The council’s Cabinet Member for Resources, Councillor Melanie Evans, attended the session with her husband, Allan, who was diagnosed with Parkinsons in 2024, aged 55 years old. Allan is a regular at the sessions.
“I’m delighted to see this provision start in Bridgend, as Parkinsons is one of the fastest growing neurological diseases. Helping people’s wellbeing by linking them to support in the community is a really positive step forward.”
Penybont FC has been central to the initiative’s success. Chief Executive Neil Ward noted that the participants themselves helped shape the sessions. “It has been rewarding for the club to have people with lived experience who have helped to design an activity that meets their needs and who have helped broaden the skills and knowledge of our coaches,” he said. “As a club, we are creating a community development plan and aim to be more active in this space going forward.”
Currently, the sessions take place every Friday morning at 11:15 am at Halo Bridgend Life Centre. However, as the weather warms up, the team is looking forward to moving the action outdoors to Penybont FC’s home ground.
Whether you’re a lifelong football fan or have never kicked a ball in your life, the message from the group is clear: come join the team!
