New fund launched to support grassroots sport across Bridgend County Borough

Wednesday 14 October 2026

A new fund offering grants of up to £1,000 has been launched to help sports clubs and community organisations create more opportunities for people to get active across Bridgend County Borough.

Bridgend County Borough Council’s Support for Sport Fund will support grassroots sport and physical activity projects for people of all ages and abilities.

The launch also celebrates investment from the Council and Sport Wales’ Capital Investment Fund to upgrade outdoor facilities at Brackla Sports Centre, based at Archbishop McGrath Catholic School.

The investment has enabled the two existing hard courts to be upgraded to a single all-weather, multi-use playing surface, providing improved facilities for school pupils, local sports clubs and community groups.

The project also includes energy-efficient LED floodlighting to support evening activities and reduce energy use. For the school, the improvements will provide more opportunities for school sport and extracurricular activities. For the wider community, they will support a broader range of sports, holiday programmes and activities beyond the school day, helping more people to take part locally.

Alongside this investment in facilities, the Support for Sport Fund will help local organisations develop the activities and opportunities available to residents.

Funding can be used for a range of projects, from purchasing equipment and running taster sessions to training volunteers, coaches and officials.

It can also support disability inclusion equipment, community sport events, venue hire for new activities, promotional materials to encourage participation and start-up costs for new community sport projects.

By helping more people to become active, the fund will support the health and wellbeing of our residents and help build healthier, more connected communities across Bridgend County Borough.

“Our local sports clubs and community groups do a fantastic job of helping people to get active and bringing communities together. This funding will give them some extra support to develop what they already do, helping more people to get active, connect with others and enjoy the wider benefits that taking part can bring. I’d encourage club and community organisations across Bridgend County Borough to find out more and see whether the fund could support their plans.”

The fund is open to constituted sports clubs, eligible National Governing Body-affiliated clubs, community groups and voluntary organisations operating within Bridgend County Borough.

The fund aims to increase participation in sport and physical activity, improve opportunities for under-represented groups and help create healthier and more connected communities.

Eligible organisations can apply for up to £1,000, with one application permitted per financial year, subject to funding remaining available.
