National Safeguarding Week shines a light on hidden harm in our communities
Friday 06 November 2026
Bridgend County Borough Council is supporting National Safeguarding Week (9–13 November 2026), raising awareness of the importance of protecting children and adults from abuse, neglect and exploitation.
Working alongside the Cwm Taf Morgannwg Safeguarding Board and partners across Wales, the council is highlighting this year's local theme, 'Hidden Harm in Our Communities', encouraging people to recognise the signs of harm and speak up when they have concerns.
Hidden harm can take many forms, from domestic abuse and coercive control to online exploitation, financial abuse and neglect. These issues are not always immediately visible and can affect people of all ages and backgrounds.
Throughout the week, a programme of learning and awareness activities will explore key safeguarding issues, including online safety, child exploitation, domestic abuse, adult safeguarding and learning from practice reviews.
The programme includes sessions for council staff and professionals working across a range of services, with additional learning opportunities taking place throughout November.
Abuse, neglect and exploitation are not always easy to recognise, and people experiencing harm may not feel able to speak out or ask for help. National Safeguarding Week is an important reminder that safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility. By raising awareness of the signs of hidden harm and encouraging people to share their concerns, we can all play a part in protecting children and adults at risk in our communities. If you are worried about someone’s safety or wellbeing, please don’t hesitate to report your concerns. Speaking up could make a real difference.
Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any concerns about the safety or wellbeing of a child or adult at risk.
Concerns about a child can be reported to the council's Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH) on 01656 642320, while concerns about an adult at risk can be reported on 01656 642477.
For social care emergencies outside office hours, contact the Emergency Duty Team on 01443 743665. If someone is in immediate danger, call 999.
