Funding serves up support for healthy pizza business

A local resident has taken his first step into launching a business by opening a pizzeria in Wyndham Street in Bridgend town centre.
Alec Gilmore has opened One More Slice in 20 Wyndham Street, a pizzeria that focuses on bringing low-calorie pizzas to Bridgend. The location of the pizzeria is remembered fondly by residents as being the home of The Sandwich Bar, which recently closed its doors after 80 years.
Alec was given a grant from the Business Start-Up Fund, a grant scheme offered by Bridgend County Borough Council in partnership with UK Steel Enterprise.
With this grant, he was able to purchase equipment essential to the business operation, such as a pizza oven and a dough mixer.
"I have always loved pizza but have equally loved keeping fit and healthy which usually doesn't go together. As it's often difficult to find a low-calorie pizza without compromising on the taste, I saw a gap in the market and went for it. The feedback I've had from customers so far has been fantastic and I've also had great support from well-wishers who remember this place in days gone-by. The support from the council’s Economic Development & Enterprise Team has been amazing and I am extremely grateful for obtaining this grant to help me purchase the equipment I needed to open. The business has taken off extremely quickly and I’ve since been able to take on four part time staff to meet with the demand. I can’t thank the council enough!”
"One More Slice is the third business on Wyndham Street to benefit from the start-up grant in the last twelve months and I’m delighted to see such a healthy take-up of this grant scheme, particularly in a premises that holds lots of memories for the residents of Bridgend. It was a pleasure getting to meet Alec and see what he is offering residents. The pizzas were fantastic, and we’re so pleased to see that he’s been able to benefit from funding through the council. The business support grants are funded through the UK Government's Shared Prosperity Fund offering a dedicated approach to supporting local entrepreneurship and economic growth.
