Food and Fun programme serves up a healthy and active summer for primary school children
Friday 21 August 2026
More than 300 children from ten primary schools across Bridgend County Borough enjoyed nutritious meals, exciting activities and valuable learning opportunities throughout the summer holidays as part of this year’s successful Food and Fun programme.
Funded through the Welsh Local Government Association (WLGA), the Food and Fun programme is a school holiday enrichment initiative designed to support children stay healthy, active and engaged during the summer break.
Running from 20 July to 6 August, the 12-day programme provided pupils with healthy breakfasts and lunches, while encouraging children to try new foods and develop positive attitudes towards healthy eating.
Alongside nutrition education, the children enjoyed a wide range of enrichment activities including sports, arts and crafts, games, outdoor play and wellbeing sessions.
Parents and carers were also invited to join their children for breakfast or lunch each week, helping to strengthen family engagement and encourage healthy eating at home.

The Food and Fun programme provides much more than meals during the school holidays. It gives children the opportunity to stay active, build confidence, learn new skills and spend time with friends in a safe and supportive environment. Through healthy food, fun activities and opportunities for learning, the programme helps supports children's physical, mental and social wellbeing while creating positive experiences that can have a lasting impact. I am delighted to see so many young people benefiting from the programme this summer and would like to thank all the staff, partners and volunteers who have made it such a success.
