Council work throughout the night to prevent major flooding

Council staff have been working throughout the night to distribute sandbags, clear drains and gulley’s and prevent widespread flooding in Bridgend County Borough.
Preparations for the severe weather began days earlier as workers checked and cleaned key culverts to make sure they were clear before the heavy rainfall arrived.

13 January 2023
- There is still a lane closure in place on the Bwlch mountain road (A4061) due to a blocked culvert. Staff continue to work to clear the blockage and debris. We would like to reassure residents that this was not a landslide.
- Officers are arranging to clear debris from the road at the dipping bridge on New Inn Road, Merthyr Mawr.
12 January 2023:
- There is currently a lane closure in place on the Bwlch mountain road (A4061) due to a blocked culvert which has caused some stones and mud to spread across the carriageway. Staff are currently on site to clear the blockage and debris. We would like to reassure residents that this was not a landslide.
- Also, the Dipping Bridge at New Inn Road, Merthyr Mawr remains closed due to high river levels.
- The sheer amount of water that fell also triggered culvert alarms in areas such as Heol Faen in Maesteg and Min Y Nant in Pencoed. However, none of the culverts were blocked and the alarms were due to the high volumes of flowing water.
Incidents such as this help to illustrate how the council works around-the-clock to keep people safe roads clear.
Our team have been working hard this morning to clear up mess and debris left behind by the heavy rainfall and to re-check the culvert network, and I would like to thank them for their fantastic efforts
