Cabinet agrees to seek developer for new Welsh-medium seedling school

Thursday 05 February 2026

Plans to establish a new Welsh-medium seedling school and childcare facilities in Porthcawl have moved a step closer after securing approval from the Cabinet of Bridgend County Borough Council to invite tenders for its construction.

The new seedling school will feature 30 full-time-equivalent nursery places and 30 reception places. Expected to open in 2027, it will be operated and governed by Ysgol y Ferch o’r Sgȇr with pupils transitioning on to that school at Year One to conclude their primary education.

This arrangement will be in place until an all-new Welsh-medium primary school can be established to serve the Porthcawl area as part of a future band of the ongoing school modernisation programme.

At the same time, a private provider will be sought to operate the seedling school’s new childcare facility. Offering 22 full time equivalent childcare places, this will cater for babies and children up to the age of four as well as offering on-site care provision after school and during the holidays.

We are entering the final stages of efforts to deliver the new seedling school and childcare facilities for Porthcawl, and setting up the process for appointing a developer represents another important milestone as we seek to deliver on our promise to support Welsh Language education within Bridgend County Borough. Today’s approval means that a full tendering process can now proceed so that a developer can be formally appointed. Once planning permission is in place and we have final confirmation from Welsh Government on the funding for the scheme, work can begin on site to provide these all-new educational facilities.
