Bridgend Works

Friday 20 March 2026

Bridgend Works will provide a visible, responsive and proactive service focused on improving the cleanliness, appearance and day-to-day condition of neighbourhoods, town centres and community spaces across the county borough.

The team will provide a quick and flexible response to environmental issues and deliver practical and visible improvements to public spaces including:

  • Litter picking and general environmental clean-ups
  • Weed control and grass cutting
  • Jet washing of pavements and street furniture
  • Graffiti removal
  • Repainting and minor repairs to public infrastructure
  • Tackling environmental blight such as fly-tipping, including on private land where powers allow

The team will also carry out small scale visible improvements to local spaces, such as:

  • New and replacement planting schemes and seasonal planting
  • Restoration and refurbishment of public realm assets
  • Repair or replacement of street furniture including benches, bins, bollards, signs and other infrastructure

A Community-Focused Approach

The team will operate on a community-first basis and target areas where improvements are most needed, working closely with:

  • Ward Members
  • Town and Community Councils
  • Enforcement officers
  • Local residents

Wider Benefits for Communities

By making these improvements, the team will provide a highly visible service that will help make public spaces cleaner, greener, safer and more welcoming for residents, improving confidence in local services and:

  • Reduce repeat complaints
  • Deter anti-social behaviour
  • Improve town centre vitality
  • Support biodiversity and greener spaces
  • Strengthen community pride and wellbeing

Current Projects

Councillor John Spanswick, the Leader of Bridgend County Borough Council, was joined by Cabinet Members for Climate Change and the Environment (Job-Share) Councillor Gary Haines, and Councillor Eugene Caparros at the first phase of the project, working to clear an impressive 547kg of rubbish that had been fly-tipped at land between Railway Terrace and a section of the Llynfi Valley Trail in Caerau, Maesteg.

FAQs

The team will provide a practical “can-do” rapid response service to tackle lower-level and environmental issues that have a significant impact on residents’ perceptions of safety, pride and wellbeing.

The public realm featured as a high priority for residents in the recent budget consultation.  In response we have invested an additional £1.5million into these services, demonstrating the council’s commitment to maintaining and enhancing our public spaces and local environment.

The team will carry out public improvement works such as litter picking, grass cutting, graffiti removal, minor repairs, fly tipping jet washing, repainting, planting and improvements to public realm assets to neighbourhoods, town centres and community spaces across the county borough.

The team will work alongside existing services such as waste, highways, shared regulatory services and enforcement, providing an additional layer of support to help address issues that often fall between services or require a coordinated practical response.

The team will target areas where improvements are most needed, and work closely with Ward Members, Town and Community Councils, Enforcement officers and local residents to identify priority locations including local hotspots, seasonal pressures, community events and regeneration initiatives.

Carrying out preventative, improvement and maintenance works on public spaces will contribute to proud, stronger, cleaner and more welcoming communities, improve confidence in council services, and extend the life of existing assets, helping to reduce longer-term replacement costs.
