Boost to community tennis in Bridgend County Borough following new agreement with Tennis Wales

Community tennis in Bridgend County Borough is set to receive a boost from a new long-term operator agreement with Tennis Wales to deliver coaching, activities and court maintenance across several local sites.

In recent years, nine courts at four locations — Heol-y-Cyw, Maesteg Welfare Park, Griffin Park (Porthcawl) and Caedu Park (Ogmore Vale) — have been refurbished through a partnership between Bridgend County Borough Council’s Community Asset Transfer Scheme and the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA). The improvements were supported by almost £520,000 of combined investment.

The new partnership builds on the success of the LTA Park Refurbishment Programme and aims to increase opportunities for people of all ages and abilities while ensuring the courts are regularly maintained to LTA standards.

Plans also include a comprehensive community tennis programme featuring weekly sessions, coaching opportunities and free activities for underrepresented groups to help make the sport more accessible to local residents.

Maesteg Welfare Park, Caedu Park and Heol y Cyw are included in the arrangement, with Griffin Park expected to join once licensing arrangements are finalised.

The partnership is set to run for 12 years and following approval by Bridgend County Borough Council’s Cabinet, officers will now agree the final terms of the contract with Tennis Wales.

“These refurbished courts are fantastic community facilities and this agreement is an important step towards ensuring they remain accessible, welcoming and well-maintained for many years to come. “It’s really pleasing to see courts located at various locations around the county borough and we want to encourage more people to enjoy the physical, social and wellbeing benefits that tennis can provide, whether they are picking up a racket for the first time or returning to the sport. “This new agreement highlights the value of working collaboratively with other organisations and reflects our commitment to ensuring a wide range of sporting opportunities are available for residents and visitors across the county borough.”
