Blackmill bridge works set to start in January 2027

Thursday 29 October 2026

Essential works to replace the A4061 river bridge at Blackmill are due to begin in January 2027 after routine inspections previously identified issues with the bridge’s structure.

The works will require an extended road closure from April 2027 when the bridge deck is removed and replaced, however there will be other closure periods from January 2027 whilst relevant utility and preparatory works are completed. The utility infrastructure will then need to be re-installed following the replacement of the bridge deck.

There are no set durations for the road closures, and every effort will be made to complete the works as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Motorists will be diverted via the A4093 at Llangeinor and signage will be installed at least four weeks before the works begin to give road users advance notice. Signage will also be displayed in wider areas allowing motorists to plan their journeys accordingly.

Arrangements are being confirmed with school transport providers, and any changes will be communicated directly to parents in due course. The council will also put plans in place for any other council services directly affected by the closure.

The council previously secured £3.5 million in Welsh Government regional transport funding to support the project. This investment will help to provide essential new infrastructure to help safeguard the route for both current and future generations.

The council and its contractor, Centregreat Limited, will provide regular updates to residents before and throughout the works.

Councillor Gary Haines and Councillor Eugene Caparros, joint Cabinet Members for Climate Change and the Environment, said the works were essential to address safety concerns and that every effort would be made to minimise disruption.

“These works are safety-driven and form part of essential emergency highways maintenance. I’d like to thank the local community for their understanding and patience while this complex and essential project is completed. “We recognise the impact an extended road closure will have on residents and road users. Although the duration has not yet been confirmed, the council and contractor will work closely together to complete the works as efficiently and quickly as possible.”
“We recognise the importance of keeping residents informed throughout this project, and regular updates will be provided on key changes and developments. “A public meeting was also held earlier this week to update residents ahead of the works getting underway and further meetings will be held individually with specific parts of the community as well as the wider public and businesses.”
