Air quality improvements continue on Park Street
Wednesday 19 November 2025
Nitrogen dioxide levels on Park Street in Bridgend town centre are continuing to fall following measures introduced by Bridgend County Borough Council to improve local air quality.
An annual update report presented to the Cabinet of Bridgend County Borough Council by the Shared Regulatory Service has confirmed that while Park Street remains the only location within the county borough to narrowly exceed national targets, emissions are continuing to fall since an Air Quality Management Area was established in 2019.
As part of an action plan, a right-hand turn lane from Park Street into Heol-y-Nant has been introduced, and the traffic light system at Park Street’s junction with Angel Street has been fully refurbished and modernised to ensure that traffic can move through efficiently and at optimum levels.
This has successfully helped to tackle nitrogen dioxide levels by improving traffic flow, reducing the number of vehicles queuing along the road, and ensuring that emissions decrease. As a result, air quality along Park Street is now expected to be fully compliant with national targets by 2026, and the council can consider whether the Air Quality Management Area is still necessary from 2027 onwards.
Using Welsh Government funding of £5,950, the council will also upgrade existing automatic monitoring sensors to ensure that monitoring can continue.
“The results of the 2025 Air Quality Monitoring report are highly encouraging and demonstrate that the measures we have taken so far are continuing to deliver positive results. “Regular monitoring of nitrogen dioxide levels along this route will continue, but I am already looking forward to the moment when we receive confirmation that national targets have been met, and that air quality has been restored.”
