Llynfi Blast Furnace

This Shared Prosperity Framework (SPF) project has been developed in collaboration with the council's Conservation and Design team and aims to sensitively restore and protect the blast furnace at Llynfi Ironworks for future generations.

Llynfi Blast Furnace is the remains of a single blast furnace from the 19th century Maesteg ironworks which operated between 1837 and 1886. The most southerly blast furnace remains standing, while a further three furnaces remain only as buried foundations.

The ironworks is a Scheduled Monument due to its potential to enhance and illustrate our knowledge and understanding of the iron industry in Wales.

In 2025, Conservation Accredited Engineers, Mann Williams undertook an inspection of the structure and produced a report outlining the works needed for the repair and maintenance of the blast furnace.

Mann Williams have been appointed to undertake detailed design work and site management work for the project.

  • Phase 1: Remove and control vegetation
  • Phase 2: Masonry repair work
