Future makers
Delivery organisation: Cardiff MET
Shaped around the council’s priorities for youth engagement, skills development and economic sustainability, this programme brought together engineers and digital specialists to deliver practical, hands on learning.
Cardiff Metropolitan University’s Cardiff School of Technologies, working with Bridgend County Borough Council worked to widen access to STEM.
- FabLab hosted workshops on smart manufacturing and digital skills for pupils from Brynteg and Porthcawl Comprehensive Schools.
- FutureMakers Bridgend ran a five day summer camp for Key Stage 3 learners (ages 11–14) from Coleg Cymunedol Y Dderwen (CCYD). The camp covered smart manufacturing, digital skills, an introduction to robotics and sensors, and engineering skills, including programming and sensor integration. These activities were led by Dr Rajkumar Singh Rathore from the Cardiff School of Technologies.
- Time on campus also offered a first taste of university life and glimpses of future career routes.

The pilot strengthened equitable access to STEM opportunities and provided a clear model for growth. Based on the feedback received, Dr Rathore reported strong outcomes and highlighted the potential to replicate the approach across other Bridgend schools.
