Active Travel Consultation

We are looking for your views to improve the walking and cycling infrastructure across Bridgend County Borough and to help shape the Active Travel routes of the future.

About the consultation

Based on the Integrated Network maps (INMs) and the Existing Route maps (ERMs), we now want to identify where new routes are needed and to learn about existing routes that need to be upgraded.

The plans for the future active travel network will be published in a new Active Travel network Map (ATNM), which are to be resubmitted to Welsh Government in December 2021.

The findings of the consultation will be used in the ongoing processes of designing and constructing Active Travel routes.

The aim is to provide a future routes network which allows for walking and cycling to become the most natural and normal way of getting about for local journeys. And, by doing so, to promote the health and well-being of everyone and to make our towns and villages more liveable places.

Active Travel routes, as set out by Welsh Government, focus primarily on settlements with a population of more than 2000. For Bridgend, maps will cover the following settlements:

  • Bettws
  • Bridgend
  • Gilfach Goch
  • Maesteg
  • Ogmore Vale
  • Pencoed
  • Pontycymer
  • Porthcawl
  • Pyle

Next Steps

The consultation is split into three steps and will provide many opportunities for the public to feed into the Active Travel Network Maps:

1. Consultation December 2020 to January 2021: Feedback on barriers to walking and cycling: What are your views on the existing infrastructure? Where do you experience difficulties when walking or cycling? And what would you like to see in the future?

2. Consultation February to March 2021: Validation of the draft network: Based on your feedback from the first consultation we will come up with a draft network map and want to hear your thoughts on the proposed plans.

3. Consultation July to October 2021: Final statutory consultation on the proposed Active Travel Network Map, which will have considered the feedback of the first two rounds of consultation. After this, the final network map will be submitted to Welsh Government for approval.
