Platinum award for eco-friendly Tynyrheol Primary School

Tynyrheol Primary has become the latest school in Bridgend County Borough to achieve the prestigious, Platinum Eco-Schools award for their commitment to all things ‘green’.

Run in Wales by the environmental charity Keep Wales Tidy, Eco-Schools is an international programme that encourages young people to take an active role in making environmental improvements within their school and the wider community.

Helping them to achieve platinum – the highest eco accolade – Tynyrheol Primary has ‘Eco-Spies’ who check the classrooms to ensure that all lights and computers have been switched off at the end of each day. The school also has regular sessions where pupils and parents work side by side to improve their school grounds.

The school also links in with the local community allotment, running a gardening club that grows fruit and vegetables, as well as planting to encourage wildlife.

Thirty one schools in Bridgend County Borough have now achieved the platinum status, and Matthew Bunt, Keep Wales Tidy’s Eco-Schools Officer, said: “Bridgend County Borough schools have a real long term commitment to Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship (ESDGC), and the success schools have with the Eco-Schools programme is a testament to this.

“Tynyrheol Primary has worked hard across all nine Eco-Schools topic areas, highlighting the positive difference they have made. I’d like to congratulate teachers, pupils and parents involved in helping the school achieve the platinum status and thank them for their efforts in showing a massive commitment to the natural world.”

Three quarters of local schools have now achieved the eco-schools green flag, while more than half have attained platinum status. We are so proud of our schools who work tirelessly to make a positive impact on the environment and improve their green credentials.
