New re-use shop in Maesteg

A new re-use shop will officially open on Friday 14 February 2020 at the community recycling centre in Maesteg as a haven for bargain hunters!

Any household items that people no longer need, but are in a good condition, can now be donated to the centre in the Heol Ty Gwyn Industrial Estate where they will then be sold.

The shop will be run by social enterprise Wastesavers in partnership with Bridgend County Borough Council and Kier. The shop will be named ‘The Siding’ in recognition of Maesteg’s mining past. A siding was where all of the coal was loaded into the rail truck ready for transportation to the docks.

All of the profits from the sale of re-usable items at The Siding will be reinvested by Wastesavers into social programmes.

We all have things at home that we don’t want or need any more, so rather than throwing them into landfill why not drop them off at The Siding so that they can be re-used.

Wastesavers already operate similar shops at the recycling centres in Llantrisant, Newport and Treherbert which are all extremely popular, so we are thrilled to open our first shop here.

If the other re-use shops are anything to go by, bargain hunters will be in for a real treat in Maesteg. Re-use shops are often full of everything but the kitchen sink, and probably one or two of them as well!

Councillor Hywel Williams, Bridgend County Borough Council’s Deputy Leader

“We’re really looking forward to officially opening this shop at the Maesteg Community Recycling Centre,” said Alun Harries, Charity Manager at Wastesavers. “It’s a great opportunity to help the residents of Maesteg ensure their unwanted but reusable items go to a good home rather than in a skip.”

Bridgend County Borough Council and Kier also operate community recycling centres in Tythegston and Brynmenyn. Full details about what can and can’t be recycled at the sites can be found on our website.
