Childcare information for parents

Summary of childcare schemes available

Children under five whose parents are keyworkers can access free childcare until 31 August 2020 through the Coronavirus Childcare Assistance Scheme (CCAS). Parents/carers will need to apply. They may need to provide evidence of key worker status and not being able to work from home. Welsh Government have clearly stated that all children who can be cared for safely at home should not access childcare through this scheme.

The scheme will close to new applications on 12 July 2020. Apply for free childcare through CCAS here.

The Childcare Offer has been suspended from 1 April 2020 to make funds available for CCAS. On 19 June, the First Minister’s update announced that childcare provision could extend to non-key worker parents from 22 June. Due to this, the Childcare Offer has partially resumed for children who were approved before 18 March and already accessing their funded places before lockdown.

Children who were due to start from 20 April 2020 onwards will not access their Offer place until the suspension lifts. The intention is that the suspension will lift in September 2020.

Children over five accessing the CCAS with their pre-school age sibling/s won’t be eligible to continue with it from 17 July 2020.

When schools finish on 17 July, parents with children aged over five who need childcare would need to access private childcare and fund it themselves. Find details of childcare provision on Dewis:

  • Flying Start (suitable for two to three year olds living in specific areas for part-time provision)
  • the Tax-Free Childcare Scheme for all children

You can work out your best option through the HMRC website’s childcare choices page. If you have a specific query regarding childcare, the Childcare Team are here to help.
