Overview

Welsh Government’s current council tax reduction scheme comes to an end in March 2017, so a new scheme is being proposed, which will be in place from April 2017 until March 2018. In this new draft scheme, it still proposes to offer up to 100% council tax support to tax payers, depending on their financial and household circumstances. Existing council tax discounts, such as the 25% single person’s discount, and existing exemptions, such as the exemption for people who are severely mentally impaired and live on their own, remain unchanged.

The council must again decide:

  • whether to increase the standard extended payment period for people who return to work, when they have been in receipt of a qualifying benefit for more than 26 weeks
  • whether or not to take into account the income that people receive from War Disablement Pensions and War Widows Pensions when deciding if people are entitled to CTR
  • whether to backdate CTR claims for more than the standard three months in certain circumstances
