Mountain Biking

Forests are particularly good for mountain biking and there are several waymarked routes within easy reach of Bridgend County Borough.
The Afan Forest Park has an extensive mountain bike trail that will take you deep into the forest. For details see the Valley Forest Guide Map to Afan Forest Park.
Mountain bike trails in and around the Rhondda Valley form part of the Rhondda Community Route network. They’re maintained and promoted by Forest Enterprise in association with Rhondda Cynon Taff County Borough Council and are described in a leaflet “Mountain Biking in the Forest”. You can get to them on a bridleway link from the Ogmore Valley Community Route
Off the waymarked trails there are opportunities for mountain biking in the Upper Garw Valley, the Garw Fechan Woodland Park and the Ogmore Forest. You’ll need good maps to explore these areas: the Ordnance Survey Pathfinder series is probably the best. You’ll need the following to cover the whole of Bridgend County Borough:
1128 Rhondda & Maesteg,
1146 Port Talbot (South),
1147 Bridgend NE & Pencoed,
1163 Bridgend (South) & Porthcawl.
You’re also allowed to cycle on certain public rights of way - bridleways and byways, not footpaths - but as they may not be surfaced, they may only be suitable for mountain bikes, Public rights of way are shown on the ordnance Survey Pathfinder maps.
If you have any queries about public rights of way you should contact Bridgend County Borough Council’s Highways Department at Morien House, Bennett Street, Bridgend Industrial Estate, Bridgend, CF31 3SH. Telephone +44(0) 1656 642537.
For general advice and information get a copy of the leaflet 'Gearing Up', available from the Cyclists’ Touring Club
Make sure you’re familiar with the Mountain Bike Code of Conduct.
