Shopping

Bridgend is a shopper's paradise of old and new happily winding its way through narrow, pedestrian only streets.

The main shopping centre of Bridgend lies on the north bank of the river and is a shopper's paradise. Small local specialist businesses blend with large national chain stores, happily winding their way through narrow streets, co-existing side by side to make the town a perfect day out. The old Victorian market hall has since gone, but the original 18th century Market Bell still hangs in the Rhiw Shopping Centre, near to the entrance of the new covered Market. The Rhiw Centre is Bridgend's main shopping mall, while to the north of the town, you will find the giant Bridgend Designer Outlet - the home of Guilt~Free Shopping which is the largest designer outlet in Wales and one of the most visited leisure attractions in the country.

Located off junction 36 of the M4, shoppers will find over 80 top name stores including Jaeger, Clarks, Karen Millen, Marks & Spencer, Ted Baker and Gap - all offering discounts of up to 50 per cent off typical retail prices, so you can afford to treat yourself without feeling guilty.

Visitors to the centre will find a foodcourt, a safety approved play area and free car parking. There is also an on-site Odeon cinema which has staged a number of Welsh film premieres.

Bridgend Designer Outlet is open seven days a week from 10am to 6pm Monday to Wednesday and Friday, Thursday 10am to 8pm, 10am to 7pm on Saturday and from 10am to 5pm on Sunday. Larger stores open at 11am on Sunday.

By virtue of its geographical situation and the enterprise of its trade people, Maesteg has developed into one of the most important shopping centres in the county. Today, using the amenities provided by modern transport, thousands of people from surrounding valleys and towns regularly buy their wares from the many modern and attractive shops that are the town's proud boast, thus forging a link with the domestic habits of their ancestors. Maesteg serves a shopping public many times greater than its own population in the urban area.

Porthcawl, at the heart of Wales' Golden Coast, is not only a great place to relax and enjoy the seaside, it's also a great place to shop! Take a stroll along newly pedestrian John Street and enjoy a hassle-free experience for shopping or visit the Heritage Coast Tourist Information Centre. There is such a variety of different Shops and Stores that it's wise to make a full day of it, with lunch in one of the many top quality Cafes or Restaurants or maybe a leisurely ice cream on the esplanade, overlooking the sea!

Throughout the County Borough, there are smaller shopping areas and villages with traditional local shops or craft centres.

The Markets

Because of our background, markets have always been a mainstay of Welsh culture and have been more than just a shopping facility. Markets have been places to meet your friends, sit and chat or catch-up on the latest ‘gossip’.

Today, nothing has changed except the greatly expanded variety of foods and items available. People still meet in the Market and sip a coffee or tea in the café before wandering around the market stalls seeking out bargains.

If you really want to get a feeling of Welsh life or meet the real locals, then pay a visit to one of the indoor markets. There are regular markets at Bridgend and Maesteg with their large Market Halls, and history that goes back into the depths of time.
