What is the Role of the Equalities Committee?

     
 

1.

Purpose

   

The remit of the Equalities Committee is to advise and make recommendations to Cabinet and Council on the mainstreaming of equalities into the work of the Council as a community leader, service provider and fair employer. The Committee will also support the Authority in achieving the aims set out in the Bridgend County Borough Community Strategy and the Corporate Improvement Plan.

     
 

2.

Role and Responsibilities

   

To prepare and develop corporate equality policies and schemes for recommendation in fulfilment of the Authority’s statutory duties and in line with its commitment to achieve the Equality Standard for Local Government in Wales.

     
   

To make recommendations on the setting of equality priorities within the Authority.

     
   

To consider proposals from the Corporate Equalities Management Group relating to the implementation of the Authority’s statutory equality duties and the Equality Standard for Local Government in Wales.

     
   

To monitor and review the implementation of the Authority’s equality policies and schemes and the Equality Standard for Local Government in Wales.

     
   

To receive statistical profiling reports across the equality strands (gender, marital status, age, race, disability, Welsh language, faith and sexual orientation) on service and employment.

     
   

To advise on the promotion of stakeholder involvement and monitor the involvement of stakeholders in the development of equality policies.

     
   

To advise on the effective promotion of equality mainstreaming within the Council, including appropriate training measures for Councillor.

     
   

To promote and provide community leadership on equality issues by developing a programme of initiatives to be recommended to Cabinet aimed at eliminating discrimination, promoting equal opportunities and good community relations across the County Borough.

     
   

To report to the Cabinet on a quarterly basis on the Authority’s progress towards fulfilling its statutory equality duties and progress towards achieving the Equality Standard for Local Government in Wales.
