Gateway to the Valleys – 11-18 provision in the Valleys Gateway area
Following a series of consultation meetings with school staff, governors, parents and pupils, as well as other users and potential users of the campus and the local community, the design of the new school building and community campus at Tondu has been completed and planning consent has now been granted.
The new school building is expected to be available in September 2013. Until this time the new school, which will serve the catchment areas that are currently served by Ogmore Comprehensive and Ynysawdre Comprehensive schools, will make use of the school buildings at both existing comprehensive school sites. The headteacher designate, Mr Andrew Warren, is currently preparing for the new school opening in September 2011 and the longer term plans needed for the move to the new school building at Tondu when completed.
The Welsh Assembly Government require the building to achieve a BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent’ to support the agenda of reducing carbon emissions and being as environmentally efficient and sustainable as possible. The project has the potential of achieving the BREEAM rating of ‘Outstanding’ (88.13%) which would make it the first education building in the UK to reach this standard.
Substantial funding has been secured from the Welsh Assembly Government’s school building transitional funding to assist the authority in funding this major scheme.
