On Tuesday 23 November 2010, children from year six of Nantymoel Primary School were surprised and excited when they were invited to an opening of an exhibition in the council-run Berwyn Centre in Nantymoel, only to find that it was their work on view.
Throughout October, the young pupils had become fascinated wih work on display during the open art exhibition in the Berwyn Centre, which annually celebrates the varied and talented work of our local professional and amateur art community. Visiting many times, they decided that they wanted to re-create the pictures and started to make up stories to go with each art work. Mrs Alyson Jones, Head teacher of Nantymoel Primary School said: “The opportunity to view local artists work really inspired and motivated the children to produce high quality art work.”
The children spent many hours in the centre’s library, researching many artists and styles leading to them spending two days creating their own pieces of art. Their class teacher Miss Alison John said: “This is the highest quality of work that a whole class has ever produced.”
To recognise their dedication, enthusiasm and talent, the Berwyn Centre decided to exhibit their work until the end of the school term in the library. Making it a surprise for the children, they were delighted to see their work on display and couldn’t wait to tell all their friends and family to come and see the exhibition.
Opened by local councillor for Nantymoel, Councillor David Jones, he said: “This is a lovely surprise for Nantymoel Primary School. I am pleased that the children are taking an interest in art and there seems to be some budding artists in Nantymoel.”
Free of charge, the exhibition runs until the end of December and is open Mondays 9am – 1pm and 3.30pm – 5pm, Tuesdays 9am – 7pm, Wednesdays 9am – 5pm, Thursdays 9am – 1pm and 4pm – 6pm and Fridays 9am – 5pm. For further details call 01656 840439 or email: Berwyn.centre@bridgend.gov.uk
