THE PURPOSE OF YOUTH WORK IN WALES

The purpose of youth work in Wales is:

Youth work, through its voluntary relationships with young people, offers inclusive opportunities to learning that are:

EDUCATIVE – Enabling young people to gain skills, knowledge, understanding, attitudes and values needed to identify, advocate and pursue their rights and responsibilities as individuals and as members of groups and communities, locally, nationally and internationally.

EXPRESSIVE – Encouraging and enabling young people to express their emotions and aspirations, through creative, sporting and challenging opportunities which raise an awareness of:

  • cultural identity
  • bilingualism and the value of ones own language
  • heritage
  • respect for diversity
  • citizenship and respect for others

PARTICIPATIVE – Where young people are encouraged to share responsibility and to become equal partners, fundamental to the learning processes and decision making structures which affect their own and other people’s lives and environments.

EMPOWERING – Encouraging and enabling young people to understand their rights and responsibilities so that they are able to act on the personal, social and political issues which affect their lives and the lives of others; as responsible citizens of the communities of which they are a part.

PROMOTE EQUALITY FOR ALL

They should:

MISSION STATEMENT – FOCUS ON YOUTH

The Youth Service in Bridgend County Borough is concerned with the fundamental and personal development of young people between the ages of 11-25.

It provides an inclusive service and strives to encourage, involve and empower young people through informal learning opportunities within a variety of different settings.

Through the work of the Youth Service young people are supported in a process that enables them to become citizens within their communities.

HOW TO BECOME A YOUTH WORKER

Firstly you need to secure a placement. You can apply for paid work or if this is not available become a volunteer. You will then be able to start your training. Your placement may be with any sector providing services to young people i.e. voluntary or statutory.

*Please be aware any offer of employment is subject to an Enhanced CRB check.

FIRST STEPS – LOCAL TRAINING

HELP WITH CHILDCARE AND FINANCE

The Y.M.C.A. has limited funds to support people in training. They can help with childcare and finance for resources i.e. books etc. The money is limited. Contact Jenny Heenan if you need to apply.

THE NEXT STAGE – HIGHER EDUCATION (UNIVERSITY)

All professional youth workers must have achieved learning to at least Diploma level. This will be at Degree level by 2010. Students need to secure a place in university along with a fieldwork placement and Supervisor. The course is delivered at Cardiff and Newport Universities.

SKILLS FOR LIFE…

Do you struggle with spelling, grammar and punctuation, writing reports, filling in forms, reading & writing or solving maths problems at work? Bridgend CBC has a new project underway, aimed at supporting individuals in improving essential skills. If you or your department could benefit from this project please call Nikki Flower on (01656) 643228, alternatively, follow the links on www.bridgenders.net
