

GOVERNORS’ FOUNDATION COURSE
The course starts at 6:30pm and finishes at 8:30pm.
* Tuesday 7 October – Induction
* Tuesday 14 October – Finance & LMS
* Wednesday 22 October – Foundation Phase 0-7
* Thursday 6 November – The Curriculum 7-14
* Monday 10 November – Self Evaluation and Planning for Improvement
* Thursday 20 November – HR Issues
The foundation course is suitable for new governors, less experienced governors and governors who want to update their experience with reference to current changes. Following completion of the six modules, governors will be sent a certificate for attending.

TOPICAL TRAINING COURSES
CHILD PROTECTION
Wednesday 1st October 2008 from 6.30pm until 8.30pm
The Local Authorities Child Protection Co-ordinator Mrs Pat Tobin will be facilitating. All schools have a statutory duty to exercise their functions with a view to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of pupils and it is recommended that all governors attend child protection awareness training. This awareness training will include:
* legal context;
* schools’ responsibilities;
* categories of abuse and signs and symptoms;
* and the child protection process including referral.
INCLUSION STRATEGY
Thursday 9th October 2008 from 6:30pm until 8:30pm
In September 2007 a draft inclusion policy was drawn up by the Corporate Director –Children, Hilary Anthony outlining the aims of Bridgend County Borough Council for providing for the needs of all children. This session will provide:
* an overview of the inclusion strategy;
* governors with the opportunity to ask questions and express views in relation to the key areas of development for children with additional learning needs that are currently being considered.
HEALTH & SAFETY
16th October 2008from 6:00pm till 8:30pm

This training session will introduce school governors to:
* health and safety legislation, principles & guidance;
* roles & responsibilities for health & safety, including school governors;
* common hazards & risk management issues in schools;
* practical risk assessment & control.
It is recommended that at least one member of the governing body attends this session.
ANTI BULLYING
20th October 2008 from 6:30pm till 8:30pm
Bridgend People First is a local charity that supports both young people and adults with learning disability to access their rights. The training session around bullying will focus on:

* What is bullying?Who are the likely victims/perpetrators?
* Rights of young people.
* Responsibilities of governors and the schools they govern.
* The consequences of not tackling bullying.
PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT
Tuesday 18th November 2008 from 6.30pm until 8.30pm
The nominated governors have already had detailed training in 2002 in this subject area. This module is an overview of:

* how the performance management arrangements should be managed within the school environment;
* understanding the framework of performance management which exists within the school and is now central to the school’s pay policy structure;
* their statutory obligation of taking part in the performance management of the Headteacher.
