Support for private fostering
We are here to offer help and guidance to private foster carers in Bridgend.
In certain cases you may be able to obtain support for children that are seen to be ‘in need’. This is usually in the form of support services and in exceptional circumstances only, financial assistance.
Private foster carers may be entitled to social security benefits, such as Child Benefit, Income Support or Job Seekers Allowance. You will need to contact your local Department of Works and Pension for more information.
Social Services’ responsibilities
It is our legal duty to make sure all private fostering arrangements are safe for the child. As a council we must:
|
Ensure the arrangement is in accordance with the Children Act 2004 |
|
Check the suitability of private foster carers |
|
Make regular visits to the child to ensure the child is well cared for in a safe and suitable environment |
|
Ensure advice, help and support is available when needed, to both the private foster carers and the birth parents |
|
Observe the overall standard of care |
Social services have the power to stop a person from private fostering if neither the carer nor the accommodation is suitable. Alternatively, if they consider something unsatisfactory, they can make it a requirement that the carer takes suitable action to remedy the problem.
