ABOUT THE YOUTH SERVICE:
What is the Youth Service?
The youth service is a statutory service that sits within the New Children's Directorate. Its aim is to provide opportunities for young people, through the Welsh Assembly Governments, (WAG) Ten Extending Entitlements. The service also offers support, information and advice counselling and activities such as sport and outdoor activities for young people, who live in the county borough of Bridgend.
All opportunities are based around the educational needs of young people, and are underpinned by the Welsh National Youth Service Curriculum Strategy and supported by the WAG's new Youth Service Strategy for Wales. All staff who work for the Youth Service is qualified to a professional level.
How can I get employment within the Youth Service?
Firstly you need to approach our staff development manager who will discuss some of the employment options available within the youth service. You need to know that the youth service is a professional organisation and to become a qualified youth worker you need to have a minimal qualification of a higher national diploma in youth and community work and for a more managerial role, a degree is required.
Not all jobs in the youth service require these qualifications, but there is an expectation to work toward becoming qualified worker. There is also an option of becoming a sport instructor the qualifications for instructor are stringent and most instructors to be qualified to coaching levels. All this can be discussed with the youth service staff development manger. It is advisable to bring an up to date C.V. You will be expected to take an enhanced police check before you are allowed to work in any centres or projects.
How can I volunteer?
To become a volunteer is pretty much the same process as becoming an employee. Firstly you make an appointment to meet with the Youth Service Staff Development Manager who will discuss the various options with you. There will be an induction into the service and you will be given appropriate training. You will be given a volunteer working pack and be expected to take an enhanced police check before you are allowed to work in any youth centre's or projects this will be paid for by the youth Service. Many volunteers have subsequently become full time employees of the Youth Service. If you have a particular interest or skill this will be an advantaged but not necessary.
INFORMATION, ADVICE AND GUIDANCE:
How can young people benefit from accessing their entitlements?
By accessing their entitlements, young people are encouraged to participate in decision making and attending to their needs, which in turn will improve their well-being, confidence and self-respect. This will also empower young people to become 'individuals'.
Who can offer support in helping young people access their entitlements?
Young people are encouraged to become involved with various services, which will guide them in accessing their rights in an environment where there is a positive focus on the success and achievement of the young people.
Where can I go for information on Contraception?
Any family planning clinic in your area will give you information and advice. We also run an Info shop & an Info bus where you can receive free condoms, Information and advice. Our Info shop in located in Wyndham Street, Bridgend.

GET ACTIVE PROJECT:
What sports and activities can young people do?
The idea of the project is to give young people a chance to try out activities that are new to them. For example: Canoeing, Mountain Biking, Gorge Walking and Rock Climbing.
What qualifications can young people gain?
Participants have the chance to take part in health and fitness OCN's and Record of Achievements. It is also possible to use activates as part of the physical section of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award.
CHANGING TRACKS PROJECT:
What do I have to do/ what can I do?
Information is given to the young person regarding accessing activities, one to one support, accreditation and other opportunities within the project.
Do I have to do this?
The support worker explains to the young person that they 'do not have to do anything' and that it is their choice to work with us on a voluntary basis. The young person has a right to refuse to work with the project.

What dose your projects enable me to do?
The project provides young people with opportunities to be trained as a part of production team with the skills necessary to film, produce, edit and broadcast your own films to an accredited level.
Can I return to the project once I have finished?

What is the purpose of the Youth Work curriculum Statement for Wales?
The aim of the Curriculum is to ensure that diverse activities, workshops & programmes delivered within the youth service are Educative and enables young people to gain skills, knowledge & understanding, that young people are able to Express their emotions & aspirations effectively , Empowers young people to understand their rights and responsibilities so they are responsible citizens and encourages them to Participate in decision making and learning processes which affect their own and other people's lives and environments.
