Using the Internet for School Work
There is lots of information on the web, but it can be overwhelming:
- Choose a search engine - the most popular is Google (www.google.co.uk)
- Know what questions you need to ask - type in a keyword/s. Avoid words which have more than one meaning.
- Learn to find as little as possible - make your search specific. Try searching for a phrase relating to your topic - put quotation marks around the words.
- Use the U.K. version of the search engine if you want U.K. based answers.
- Try more than one search engine and bookmark your favourites.
Can you trust information on the web?
Anyone can register a domain name and create a website, but is the information true and accurate? Check out who owns a website at www.whois.net for international names or www.nic.uk for U.K. sites.
When you are looking for information on the web you can never be certain that what you are reading is the truth, but you can help yourself decide:
- Use more than one source of information. Compare what they say. If they contradict each other, the likelihood is that one site is giving wrong information.
- Don't confuse fact with opinion. If a claim is made look for the facts to back it up.
- Is the site updated regularly?
- Why would they say that? A company with a financial interest in a subject, a political party or pressure group could be biased.
Plagiarism
"Cutting" information from a website and "pasting" it into your own document is cheating and is called plagiarism.
It is fine to use internet sources, as long as you say which ones. Use the information you find on the web but rewrite it in your own words. At the end of a piece of schoolwork you should name the websites which helped you.
