Listed Buildings
Listed Buildings are buildings that are considered to be important to the nation to preserve and protect for several reasons:
- architectural interest
- historic interest
- historical associations
- group value with other listed buildings.
The responsibility for listing a building lies with Cadw, Welsh Historic Monuments (link) who are part of the National Assembly for Wales. Managing listed buildings is the responsibility of the local planning authority.
Listed buildings are classified into three grades which reflect their relative importance:
- Grade I,
- Grade II*,
- Grade II.
All listed buildings, regardless of their grade are given protection by law. Bridgend County Borough has 359 listed buildings, most of which are Grade II.
Alterations to listed buildings
It is important to note that any demolition, extension, or alterations (whether internal or external) that affect the architectural or historic interest of a listed building in any way will require Listed Building Consent. Unauthorised alterations to listed buildings are a criminal offence, they are viewed with great seriousness in law and may result in prosecution.
Listed Building Consent
This is an application that is submitted to the local planning authority to demolish, extend or alter a listed building in any way that would affect its character. Building works could range from the addition of signage, the provision of an extension or in extreme cases, demolition. Minor works, or internal works, that do not require planning permission may need Listed Building Consent.
Finding out whether a building is listed or not
You can find out if a building is listed by contacting us. A copy of the listing description can be obtained. However this provides only general information and it is therefore important not to assume that if something is not in the description that it is not listed. Always check with the local authority before starting any works to a listed building.
