Health & Safety – Cooling Tower Notifications
Anybody who has control of a premise has a duty under the Notification of Cooling Towers and Evaporative Condensers Regulations 1992 to notify the local authority in writing with details of any 'notifiable devices'.
A copy of the notification form can be downloaded here.
Under the regulations 'notifiable devices' include cooling towers and evaporative condensers, except when they contain water that is not exposed to the air and the water and electricity supply are not connected.
Notification enables local authorities to help prevent potential Legionella outbreaks (including Legionnaires’ disease) and help in the investigation of any such outbreaks.
Even if a premise is enforced by the Health and Safety Executive, you must still notify the local authority.
It is also important that if a tower becomes redundant and is decommissioned or dismantled, that the local authority be updated.
