Tattooing, Piercing, Electrolysis and Acupuncture

The Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1982 requires the following types of activities to be registered with the council:

Acupuncture

Tattooing

Ear Piercing

Electrolysis

Body piercing (other than ear-piercing) is not currently required to be registered under this legislation, however anyone carrying out body piercing must ensure compliance with health & safety legislation, which also requires action to control infection risks to operators and clients.

The Act requires registration to cover both the person and the business carrying out the practice and the premises used.

The byelaws cover:

cleanliness of the premises and fittings

cleanliness of persons, and

cleaning and sterilisation of instruments, materials and equipment

A copy of the registration certificate and the relevant byelaws must be displayed at the premises.

Fees are payable when you initially register your business and your premises.

Currently these are:
Business / individual: £48.00
Premises: £48.00

For an application form please contact the Public Protection Department via one of the methods below. It is advisable to check with the Department, to ensure none of the details given have been changed.
