Food Safety – Welsh Food Hygiene Award

Background information

Welsh Food Hygiene Award Scheme aims to give recognition to food premises that have attained and maintained high standards of cleanliness and food hygiene practices.

The businesses must have addressed key issues of the Food Regulation (EC) No.852/2004 and Food Hygiene (Wales) Regulation 2006. This requires for:

The implementation of a suitable Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) procedure.

Appropriate food hygiene training for food handlers.

To meet food temperature control requirements.

The food premises to be in structurally good condition.

The award is given at the council’s discretion following one unannounced inspection where the required standards have been achieved and maintained. There is a facility to take the awards away if standards are not maintained on subsequent visits.

The scheme has three levels of award– Gold, Silver and Bronze. Those food businesses that are given a Gold award must have achieved the highest standards in all required areas.

Food businesses should be pleased to receive any level of award. Some may be disappointed to have not received a Gold level award straight away but it must be stressed that a Bronze award is a significant achievement in itself.

Businesses may, on subsequent inspections, be eligible for a higher level of award if they have made further improvements.

How do I get an award?

If your business is involved in the sale or preparation of food you may be considered for an award. Examples are:

  Workplace restaurants / canteens

  School kitchens / canteens

  Pubs

  Mobile food traders

  Residential care premises

  Food retailers

  Cafeterias

The level of award you receive depends on your success in meeting standards in the following areas:

  Good food hygiene practices

  Cleanliness

  Staff Training

  Hazard Analysis

Your Environmental Health Officer / Food Safety Inspector will fully explain the requirements during your next inspection at which time your eligibility for an award will be determined.

The award and certificate is owned by the Council and can be withdrawn at any time. If your food award is withdrawn the reason(s) for this course of action will be explained. If this happens, the food business can appeal against the decision by telephoning the Food Safety Manager at the Council.

Do I keep the award forever?

After the award has been issued it is valid until your next inspection date.

If the standards of hygiene at your business are maintained you may keep the award. Higher standards will result in a higher award at a subsequent inspection.

The award will be taken away should food hygiene standards fall below those necessary.

How do I benefit from taking part?

All those businesses that meet the required standards will be presented with a certificate that can be displayed on the premises. The certificate will demonstrate to the public the food premises commitment to high hygiene standards and providing safe food. This will enhance the food premises reputation with customers and efforts will be made to publicise and promote the initiative locally.

Who has been given an award?
