Safe Routes in Communities

Quick Links

Safe Routes in Communities initiatives are aimed at encouraging the use of sustainable modes of transport, such as walking, cycling and public transport for local journeys.

Safe Routes in Communities schemes can include the provision of pedestrian central refuges, road narrowings, the enhancement of pavements and footpaths and the development of cycle routes and associated facilities such as cycle parking.

Since 1999, the Council has been promoting walking and cycling initiatives under the Welsh Assembly Government’s Safe Routes to Schools programme. In 2007, this programme was renamed Safe Routes in Communities.

Since the programme was originally established, the council has attracted over £1million of Transport Grant funding from the Welsh Assembly Government to implement measures for primary schools in Cefn Glas, Brackla, Ogmore Vale, Cwmfelin, Aberkenfig, Cefn Cribwr and Laleston, as well as Brynteg Comprehensive School.

Schools that have completed a School Travel Plan are eligible to enter the bidding process for Safe Routes in Communities funding.

Proposals put forward by local communities could also be eligible to enter the bidding process for funding, particularly where they are supported by Community Access Plans (CAPs).

Further information on Safe Routes in Communities, School Travel Plans and Community Access Plans is available from the council’s Transport Policy and Development Team using the contact details below.
