Bridgend has an expanding network of routes to encourage more people to walk and cycle more often and to become more active.

The network includes routes in urban areas aimed at encouraging walking and cycling as alternatives to using the car, Safe Routes in Communities schemes to encourage walking and cycling for local journeys, and leisure routes, such as the National Cycle Network and local community routes, which are ideal for families and less confident cyclists wishing to enjoy the outdoor environment.

In addition, the County Borough’s Rights of Way Network also has more than 500km of footpaths and 81km of bridleways which have existed for at least one hundred years.

The Council have also produced two key documents which outline our programme for the development of walking and cycling within the County Borough.

The Rights of Way Improvement Plan (ROWIP) sets out proposals for improved access to the countryside as well as identifying, prioritising and planning improvements to the local rights of way network.

The Walking and Cycling Strategy focuses on the development of walking and cycling primarily as transport modes, but also considers the potential impact that walking and cycling can have on tourism, leisure and health. A Welsh language version of the Walking and Cycling Strategy is also available.
