Snow Clearance and Salting

During the winter months, Bridgend County Borough Council has the difficult job of keeping traffic flowing safely on the road network when it is affected by severe weather.
Weather conditions are continually monitored and when snow or ice is likely the Council carries out precautionary salting the network of main roads and other selected routes.
Bridgend County Borough Council has over 3,000 tonnes of road salt stocks stored in its salt dome at Waterton.
Weather forecasts are received daily from the Metro Group UK from October to April, giving the estimated minimum temperatures. These forecasts are evaluated and if required the necessary action is taken.
The salting operations are carried out by a fleet of four dedicated spreading lorries. Each lorry follows a prescribed treatment route and can be mobilised within 2 hours at any time of the day or night.
Minor roads and footways not on the salting routes are served with over 200 grit bins. These are provided for self help by the public at known problem areas such as sharp bends or steep gradients. Requests for new grit bins are assessed and prioritised as funding allows. The bins are routinely filled after periods of severe weather and as requested by the public.
