New rules on waste
Householders who allow unlicensed operators to dispose of their waste could face £5,000 fines under new rules designed to combat flytipping.
Under waste Duty of Care regulations, householders must ensure that all household, garden and construction refuse is disposed of properly using licensed operators. If illegally dumped rubbish is traced back to a householder, they could be fined.
Household waste can still be disposed of free at household amenity sites and the council offers a collection service. Householders can also arrange this with registered waste carriers - visit www.environment-agency.gov.uk/publicregister for more details.
The following tips will help you stay on the right side of the law:
- the contractor fall into one of the following categories: all Building and Allied Trades, House Clearers, Retail Establishments, Scrap Metal Dealers? These normally need a waste carrier registration.
- for their registered waste carrier number. If they cannot supply this, refuse the service and tell them to speak to the Environment Agency on 08708 506506.
- a number is provided, call the Environment Agency on 08708 506506 and request an instant waste carrier validation check. You can also check online at www.environment-agency.gov.uk/publicregister.
