Clean Rivers Project

Clean Rivers was established in 1991 as the South Wales Rivers Litter Abatement Project. This was a pilot project focusing on developing a system of best practice for the removal and abatement of litter from riverbeds and their banks. It has now been established throughout most of Wales and has been very successful in the county borough.

The project is based on a partnership approach involving Keep Wales Tidy Campaign, Local Authorities, and many other organisations including the Environment Agency. The project then develops partnerships with local community groups and sets up rivercare groups who 'adopt' and manage their local stretch of riverbank.

There are currently 11 river care groups throughout Bridgend County Borough undertaking a range of activities from litter picking to tree planting and bird box construction. The groups have helped to enhance the rivers and their surrounding areas and the numbers have increased steadily in recent years. There are now groups in the Maesteg and Garw valleys, Pencoed, Kenfig Hill and central Bridgend. The County Borough's river network has seen a dramatic improvement thanks to these working groups and hope they will continue with their good work.
